Mindfulness-based somatic therapy toolkit: for teachers and parents

Children cannot simply think their way out of an activated nervous system.

Before they can reflect, problem-solve or make a different choice, they often need support to feel safer, steadier and more connected within their body.

This toolkit brings together mindfulness, nervous-system education and somatic, body-based practices in a format that is accessible to everyday adults. You won’t need specialist therapeutic training or previous experience with mindfulness.

You’ll learn how to offer children practical experiences that build body awareness, emotional understanding and the capacity to return to regulation—without expecting them to be calm all the time.

The toolkit will help you:

  • Recognise how stress and nervous-system activation can appear in children and teens.

  • Look beneath behaviour and respond with greater understanding.

  • Introduce body awareness in safe, age-appropriate ways.

  • Help children notice early signs of worry, overwhelm or shutdown.

  • Use movement, breath, sensory awareness, imagination and mindfulness to support regulation.

  • Choose strategies to settle, energise, focus or reconnect.

  • Build emotional resilience through regular practice—not only during difficult moments.

  • Adapt activities for different ages, needs, environments and nervous systems.

  • Support children without trying to remove every uncomfortable feeling.

A calmer child isn’t the only goal

The aim is not to make difficult feelings disappear.

It is to help children recognise what is happening inside them, discover what supports their nervous system and build confidence in their ability to move through life’s challenges.

Small practices, repeated with a trusted adult, can become lifelong emotional resilience skills.
